Introducing (some) of Our Speakers

We have started to introduce some of our plenary and keynote speakers that you will hear from during the conference.

Allow us to introduce you to:
Dave Hall - Beyond Lean: the Challenge and Power of Dis-Continuous Improvement

Dr Dave Hall has an innate passion for driving innovation and has developed a unique approach to using some most unusual creativity techniques to both embed and then drive the innovation process. He set up the Ideas Centre in 2011 to help organisations to escape from "more of the same", conventional and traditional thinking.
Katherine Hirst - The Entopia Building - managing processes whilst balancing sustainability objectives

Katherine Hirst is Head of Strategic Operations at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). Her role includes working to ensure that CISL and University processes are embedded in a way that allows CISL to deliver its wide-ranging activities from convening global networks, developing pioneering research, catalyzing entrepreneurship to delivering empowering education – all with the aim of transforming economies for people nature and climate.
For more details about our speakers and to take a look at our other speakers who have not yet been formally revealed head over to the conference website.

Buddy Scheme

We are keen to ensure that everyone attending our conference feel included whether it is their first time, or they are a “frequent flyer”. As such we are keen to link new attendees with those that have been before. The link up will take place during August and September allowing individuals to get in contact and perhaps chat ahead of the conference.

If you are willing to help to welcome first timers as a buddy please get in touch via leanhe2024@admin.cam.ac.uk.

Introducing the Cambridge Union Society

Day one of the 2024 Lean in Higher Education International Conference will be held at the iconic Cambridge Union Society where you will get to tread the same floors as world leaders, artists and academics. Some facts about this historic building:
  • Founded in 1815 the Cambridge Union Society is the oldest continuously running debating society in the world.
  • The foundation stone itself was laid on 4 June 1884 - along with a metal box containing a copy of the Union rules, a list of officers and committee members, and some recent coins and newspapers.
  • Officially opened in 1866, the Union’s home is a Grade II listed building. A large scale refurbishment was completed in 2021
Cambridge Union Society and WWII

On 28 July 1942 a low flying German aircraft dropped eight high explosive and three incendiary bombs on the centre of Cambridge.

Three people were killed and there was substantial damage to buildings across the city.

The only University building that was directly hit was the Cambridge Union Society. Amazingly you can still see evidence of the shrapnel damage on books within the collection. You will get to see this for yourselves during the drinks reception on day one of the conference which will be held in the Keynes Library.
